This week we celebrated the Birth of Guru Nanak Dev ji – and all through the week, I was Blessed to embrace the teachings from different aspects – and as the reflections happened, there was ONE CORE Message that connected with me the most – Today, I share that Message with YOU – My Dear Readers!
We all are aware that Guru Nanak Dev ji was BORN with a Mission to Spread LOVE & JOY to the WORLD – But this week, I was introduced to the “Dazzling Connect” that was rooted in Guru ji’s Mission – Baba Nanak wanted the world to be experience BLISS and never feel LOST in this Wondrous World of God. Countless encounters reveal that anyone who met the Guru received the GIFT of BLISS. Through this Post – I share with you the STORY of the very First Person who was fortunate to receive the Dazzling Connect which resonates on the “Gift of Bliss”
Let us start from the START – It was the TIME for Guru Nanak Dev’s Birth –The entire family (Mother – Mata Tripta Ji, Father – Mehta Kalu Ji and daughter Bebe Nanaki) awaited the BIRTH of Guru ji – Daulta Dai, a Muslim midwife was by the side of Mata Tripta ji during the times.

As I write, I recall the verse of Baba Nanak in the SGGS on Ang 72 that confirms that Unity with God is always “Pre-ordained”.
sohaaganee ki-aa karam kamaa-i-aa.
What actions have the happy soul-brides performed?
poorab likhi-aa fal paa-i-aa.
They have obtained the fruit of their pre-ordained destiny.
nadar karay kai aapnee aapay la-ay milaa-ay jee-o. ||8||
Casting His Glance of Grace, the Lord unites them with Himself. ||8||
Blessed was the Destiny of Daulta Dai for she was chosen to be the FIRST PERSON EVER to set eyes upon Guru Nanak Dev Ji on Earth…She received the Gift of Bliss from Baba Nanak and was GIFTED galore Treasures on the Blessed Day of Guru Nanak Dev ji’s arrival in this World.
Interestingly, her name, Daulta, means TREASURE or WEALTH but in reality, she was quite poor from a materialistic wealth standpoint and thus she always demanded MORE – One can say that she considered WEALTH to be her “Ultimate Goal” in LIFE – She was always preoccupied with the acquisition of material goods and money…and the BIRTH of Baba Nanak was merely a means to get More Money from the family…Little did she know what laid ahead of her when Destiny guided her to the HOME of Baba Nanak.
Destiny bought Daulta Dai to the house of Guru Nanak Dev ji – When Mata Tripta Ji was roughly 10 days away from giving birth, Daulta Dai started visiting the house daily to check up on Mata Ji. In the societies, a boy’s birth was more celebrated than a girl’s birth. A family with a new baby boy would tend to be more generous at a boy’s birth and Daulta Dai awaited such opportunities
She was aware that the family desired for a son and thus requested Mehta Kalu Ji to pay her generously – Daulta Dai said – “I pray that God sends a brother for Nanaki. If God gives generously to you, then will you give generously to me?”
Mehta Kalu was very wealthy and he too wished for a son and thus he welcomed Daulta Dai’s prayers, “Yes, of course! Ask for whatever you want.”
Daulta Dai was waiting for this Moment – She folded her hands and said humbly, “Please, the winter is coming and even before it hit this year, we’ve run out of grain. Please, give us a big bag full of grain so that we can manage this winter. Also, I’m old now and can’t stand the cold – please also give me a warm, heavy blanket. Perhaps, a few coins as well, so we can manage…”
The day before Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s birth, Daulta Dai came around and she assessed that the time for birth was coming close. From that afternoon through the evening, Daulta Dai stayed at Mehta Kalu Ji’s house. It was a Beautiful Night – The glow of the Full Moon was mesmerizing and the stars dazzled brightly and seemed closer than they normally appeared…The Universe too awaited the BIRTH of Guru Ji.
It is said that Daulta Dai made the preparations and the process of Child Birth began. Normally, when babies are born, the crying of baby signifies BIRTH – But Guru ji was born different – with no sound of cry – Daulta Dai was petrified – There was a bright candle lighting the room. However, when the baby was BORN, the candle’s light suddenly seemed dim because the entire room was now filled with “Divine Light”. It was at this point that Daulta Dai first laid her eyes on Guru Nanak Dev Ji. She was taken aback…because the baby, though not crying, on the contrary, the baby was SMILING.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji was no ordinary baby – He was God in Human form and the so the contrary happened – In Normal circumstances, a crying baby brings a SMILE on the face of a Midwife and here the baby was smiling and the Midwife was crying – Tears flooded her eyes as soon as her hands touched the Pure, Divine form of Baby Guru Nanak Dev Ji.
Daulta Dai was mesmerized to see Guru Nanak dev ji – She was in a trance – with no idea of what was happening to her, she continued to admire the Baby – Immense sense of Peace and Happiness was experienced by her – She felt CONTENT for having laid her eyes upon Guru Ji.
Precious Moments of her LIFE were these for Daulta Dai as SHE was receiving the Gift of Bliss from Baba Nanak.
While Daulta Dai was receiving the Gifts of Bliss, a lady servant of the house informed the father of the arrival of a “Baby Boy”. Upon hearing the GOOD NEWS, Mehta Kalu ji went to fill a huge bag of grain; grab a cozy, warm blanket; and some money for Daulta Dai. Then he eagerly waited for Daulta Dai to come out of the birthing room so that he could give her what she asked for…
However, when Daulta Dai finally emerged, she was a CHANGED PERSON. The transformed Daulta Dai had no interest in the world and failed to even notice Mehta Kalu Ji who was waiting for her to hand over the demanded Gifts … She was quickly making her way home when Mehta Kalu ji called out to her…
But was Daulta Dai even listening – It seemed that she had found herself a NEW WORLD where nothing mattered – No voices were heard and no faces seen – Mehta Kalu called her THRICE and then dashed in front of her and blocked her way out.
Daulta Dai’s eyes were filled with “TEARS of JOY” but for Mehta Kalu the tears meant despair – He was perplexed and asked her the reason for her crying and if all was well with his New Born Son.
Daulta Dai said that the child was Healthy and that she had never seen such a child in her entire life – She also said that the LOOK of the CHILD was mesmerizing. Her words bought a SMILE on the Proud Father’s face – He then handed her the gifts saying – “Well then… here’s a big bag of grains, a blanket, and some money. Please, take this before leaving.”
Daulta Dai smiled and said – “I don’t need any of this. I’ve already received everything.”
The father was now more puzzled and asked – Who gave you everything?”
Daulta Dai SMILED and said – “Your Child is Blessed – HE is a Great Being who has given me EVERYTHING. I don’t DESIRE anything MORE” – She continued, “Mehta Kalu, your son has made me wealthy beyond understanding. For many years and probably many lifetimes, I’ve been a beggar asking for material goods, just to scrape by. But now, I’m leaving your house richer than I ever have been. With wealth that will always be with me and will never run out. Oh Mehta Kalu, the riches your son has given me… I wish I could distribute them to everyone across the whole entire world!”
Saying this she went to her HOME and it is believed that she this was the last time she was seen in the Village…That Blessed Night, Daulta Dai had received the Gift of Bliss.
Daulta Dai was now a CONTENT SOUL – With fulfilment in her awareness – SHE was RICH beyond measures 🙂

Daulta Dai’s life inspires us to REFLECT upon the “Importance of Contentment” – Only when we are CONTENT, can we be free from our WANTS & DESIRES. A Content Soul can LOVE others and SPREAD JOY in this World – This is the Simple Equation of a Happy World and hence, seeking Fulfilment in our Life is a MUST if we wish to make this World a BLISSFUL ABODE.
TAKEAWAY from this POST is that Fulfilment and not mere “Happiness” must be the “Ultimate Goal” in our Life. Daulta Dai was looking for Happiness through materialistic gains in this World but a single Glance of Baba Nanak filled her with Contentment – all her wants & desires ended…She no longer desired the fleeting pleasures of this World. Blessed was Daulta Dai and Blessed we all can be – Let us offer our Gratitude to Guru Nanak Dev ji to Bless us with “Contentment” thereby making us the Richest People in the world.
